SARA presents Bexar County with proposal to fund improvements to the San Antonio River

SARA, Bexar County and City of San Antonio form Committee of Six comprised of elected representatives from each entity to serve as the oversight committee to guide the San Antonio River Improvements Project

SARA and Bexar County conduct series of public meetings and community workshops on San Antonio River Improvement Project

Fall 1998

Bexar County Commissioners Court passed resolution stating financial commitment of up to $73 million of flood control improvements on San Antonio River Improvement Project

May 4, 1999

Congress passes the Water Resources Development Act of 2000 authorizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to expand the purposes of the previously authorized San Antonio Channel Improvement Project to include ecosystem restoration and recreation

Complete Final Design on Downtown Reach

Initiate construction on Downtown Reach

City of San Antonio sets funding commitment to San Antonio River Improvements Project at $37.8 million based upon Concept Design estimate

April 2001

Complete Construction of Downtown Reach (Downtown project completed three months early and $500,000 under budget)

October 2002

Completion of Preliminary Design: Museum Reach

October 2003

USACE releases National Environmental Restoration Plan announcing federal “interest” in the Mission Reach only and setting federal funding level in the project

April 2004

City, County, SARA staff decision to recommend Scenario “G” with private funded components (if funds were available). Scenario “G” with private funding proposed the following schedule:

  • Final Drawings – September 2006.
  • Bidding finished by November 2006.
  • Construction started December 2006.
  • Completed by Dec. 2010

Scenario G includes full design of public and privately funded project components and construction documents for public components and bid alternates for amenities as funds become available from other sources.

Committee of Six authorizes Final Design, including Scenario G on the Museum Reach: Urban Segment

August 2004

City and County Authorize Final Design Phase for Mission Reach and Museum Reach. City approves MOU with SARA
